ROME/SYDNEY (Reuters) – Australian Cardinal George Pell, the highest-ranking Vatican official to testify on systemic sexual abuse of children by clergy in the Roman Catholic Church, on Monday said senior clergy lied to him to cover up abuse in the 1970s.

The Vatican’s treasurer told Australia’s Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse that he was deceived about why abusive priests were moved from parish to parish.

Man Jailed for Child Sexual Abuse Publications

A 40-year-old Waikato man was today sentenced in the Hamilton District Court to three years and two months’ imprisonment for exporting, importing, possessing and distributing over 900 child sexual abuse publications using the internet.

Clinton Baylis was convicted on 16 charges. Most publications were graphic, showing serious offending against young children. He was also convicted for possessing cannabis utensils.

Authorities in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand contributed to the Customs investigation that identified Baylis.

B.C. man accused of sexually abusing his children granted time to appeal after expert witness called a ‘fraud’

VANCOUVER — A “high-conflict” matrimonial battle centred on allegations of child sexual abuse has taken a startling turn, with a B.C. Court of Appeal judge acknowledging this week that an expert witness — whose testimony helped brand a father of four as an incestuous child molester — might be a “fraud” who relies on “debunked and inadmissible scientific theory.”

Claire Reeves, 74, gave testimony on behalf of a Vancouver-area woman who alleged her former husband had sexually abused their four children. The couple separated in 2009 and the father was granted supervised access to the children later that year.

Six arrested, charged for sex crimes against children in Snohomish County

Washington State Patrol’s Missing and Exploited Children Task Force arrested six people during a four-day operation that targeted people who sexually exploit children.

The Snohomish County operation concluded on February 21, with the arrest and charging of six people whose crimes include commercial sexual abuse of a minor, rape of a child, sexual abuse of a minor, rape of a child, sexual abuse of a minor and child pornography.

Alabama man indicted on child pornography and sex tourism charges

An Alabama native was indicted today and charged with multiple crimes involving travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with minors and child pornography, announced Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Kenyen R. Brown of the Southern District of Alabama.
